what could have been!
so for those of you who have already preordered your middleman dvds - and those of you waiting to get yours at comic-con, here's a treat, the kind folk over at shout! factory have posted a blog on the evolution of the cover art for the set...

http://www.shoutfactory.com/video/wip/12/the_evolution_of_box_art_-_the_middleman.aspx

...have a look, and imagine that your dvd set could have looked like, say...this:

Gotta say, I'm not terribly fond of the cover that was chosen.

But then again, I'm not a marketing guru nor a graphic artiste.

I can't see past the sorrow I feel for the show's cancellation. All the possible covers are equally bittersweet. ;)

I think I like the one posted here the best. Wendy in the catsuit isn't representative of her character or the majority series.

Here, they look suitably like partners, it conveys both the comedy and the comic-book evil theme.

Maybe they'll give us the above cover for the PAL edition...?

I like this green cover better than the one chosen. It seems to fit the tone of the show better. Not that big a deal, I guess. :)

I like this one (points up) better than the one that was chosen, and I say that as an Emma Peel fan. But it doesn't matter, I'm still buying one, and another one to give to someone.

The one they chose is pretty damn ugly. Doesn't convey the fun of the show at all. Looks more like a bad TV movie than anything. Definitely like the earlier concepts better. Fortunately it's the show itself that really matters to me and I can only hope they don't bring the design aesthetic from the final cover to the menus.

Now if I could get my hands on a high resolution version of the cooler cover I could just print it out on nice paper and cover the cover.

What he (and others) said! :-)

I like the one you posted the best of all of them, and would happily print out a hi-res version of that to re-skin my DVD set when I get it.

I just love the look of The Middleman and Wendy in their regular outfits, and think the black catsuit is a fun gag, but not iconic enough of the show to be the DVD cover.

Still, super excited about the DVD and looking forward to it!

I'm going to be the lone voice to say that I actually really like the cover they finally chose. While I agree with the above commenters that having Wendy and the Middleman in the matching uniforms is more indicative of the characters and the tone of the show, it doesn't "grab you" as much as the final design might. Seeing as how the people at Shout! Factory are looking to satisfy the show fans but ALSO bring in new viewers, they have to find something that's both middle ground and snazzy enough to catch they eyes of newbies. In that regard, I think they chose wisely.

As of this very moment, I'm working on a textbook cover that features an almost identical color palatte as the concept above and the final version. My cover is dark gray with both light green and dark blue accents. I've been going back and forth on which should be the accent color and which should be the main color. Upon looking at the two MM DVD covers, I realized something they did in the design that will help me out as well: by going with the dark blue, the yellow logo pops much more against the background. On that version, both the characters and the logo stand out against the background without fighting it. So thanks to viewing all these different designs, I now know how to proceed with my own project at work. Hooray!

Why'd they have to pick one that's all O HAI FEMALE CROTCH?

On the other hand, if that's supposed to bring in the young male demographic, why didn't this poster advertising the show draw them in in the first place?

I think I just like the rejected picture more because it's more representative of the show, with the Middleman and Wendy as partners. I like the endearingly goofy look on their faces. And it looks just like the Middleman Blog graphic at the top! :-)

the words "ABC Family" spring to mind why.

People suspected the channel (rightfully so, most times) that it's a teeny girl channel for jesus freaks.

I like the green cover more than the chosen one, just because Wendy only wears that catsuit once and the pose looks a bit lame. And the back to back pose looks so much more buddy buddy and fun, like the show.
