for a few days, i have teased the identity of the big name actor who joined team middleman for a guest shot as our first ever villan, the nefarious doctor gibbs - a renegade experimental scientist using genetically engineered primates to fulfill a demented dream of world domination.

today i am proud and excited to announce the identity of our big name actor/special guest villain...



...it's none other than mary lynn rajskub - the gifted actor and comedienne known to tv fans all over the world as chloe o'brian, jack bauer's long-suffering CTU associate on "24!"

(now, the lawyers over at abc family have asked that i request that you not steal this photo - so, hey, don't steal this photo!)

for several days, mary lynn braved the vancouver winter, my complicated and draconian dialogue (rendered untweakable by the WGA strike rules and my own insistence on fidelity to the source material), the presence of some rather large tesla coils and some very angry apes to bring to us a fantastic comedic performance.

i have been a fan of mary lynn's work for a long time, and it was truly an amazing experience to have someone who created one of the top ten in my list of the top 25 characters in television to become part of one of my shows.

Good choice, though. *insert Jack Bauer gag here* She was probably the one reason I watched the last season of 24 -- and they woefully underwrote her character.

She's wonderful! I so wanted to see her when she came through DC to do her "Turns Out I'm Funny" stand-up show in October, but forces beyond my control kept me away.

Now I have the Michael Penn song "Turn Around Mary Lynn" stuck in my head. I blame you! ;)

Chimps vs. apes

So, I'll bet the decision to go with an ape as opposed to a chimp was due to the fact that a guy can fit in an ape suit and a guy is easier to direct than a real chimp and a CGI or animatronic chimp would have looked not so good.

Chimps would still be cooler. I mean, of course a 300 pound talking gorilla can be a crime boss, but it's more fun to see a 3' tall chimp be one.
